JBT’s painting, 'Prairie Fire,' is inspired by the land of her ancestors. On the Wind River Reservation, after a long winter, a miracle happens: the prairie floor erupts in a cascade of color so intense it looks like fire. But this is a fire that gives life, not takes it. Joanne wanted to capture that feeling of awe and warmth—the shock of seeing reds, oranges, pinks, purples, and yellows stretching to the horizon. Through an abstract style, she attempts to convey not just the sight, but the feeling of that moment: the warmth of the sun, the whisper of the grass, and the deep, enduring connection to this beautiful, cyclical event that has defined her and her families relationship with this land for centuries.
